Silver is a material that could darken depending on some factors. This is a completely normal process that happens when the silver is exposed to the hydrogen sulfide present in the air.
That doesn’t mean that is not good quality silver. Quite the opposite! Such is the case that when silver darkens it means that it is real silver, the high-quality one. Alloys, however, tend not to darken when mixed with other materials with toxic baths that prevent silver (the lifelong one) to darken or to change its color. Then, what to do when silver darkens? We give you some advice.
HOW SHOULD YOU KEEP YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELS?
You may ideally keep jewels in dry and cold (but never wet) places, far from direct sunlight exposition and very warm places. It is better to avoid keep them in direct contact with wood because its acids could damage silver. In the ideal case, you may keep them in a padded jewelry box or something like that. If possible, use hermetic small bags to avoid them to scratch among them.
WHAT TO AVOID FOR SILVER JEWELS NOT TO GET DAMAGED?
Try to take off your jewels before taking a shower, going to bed or doing physical activity, since sweat will not help keeping a good maintenance of silver. In addition, you should avoid direct exposure to corrosive agents such as chlorine, grease, perfume, salt water, cleaning products...
Likewise, direct exposure to artificial light or sunlight for long periods of time can accelerate the deterioration process of your silver jewelry.
HOW TO CLEAN AND PRESERVE SILVER JEWELRY?
First, and as a basic routine, is recommended to always wipe with a cloth your jewelry after taking it off, to remove possible residues of our own skin, creams, perfumes…We know that sometimes this may be a nuisance and, therefore, we list below some options to clean the silver more thoroughly and make your jewelry look like new:
- Immerse your piece of silver for ten minutes in soapy water or baking soda. After this time, take it out and dry it well with a cloth. Mix warm water with a little bit of soap and rub the piece with a soft toothbrush. This option is ideal for cleaning jewelry with nooks and / or heavy soiling. If the dirt persists, you can repeat the process with clean water, without additives.
- Although we prefer not to use any particular product (the above options are very much valid for us), there are many specific materials for cleaning and polishing silver, such as cloths and / or silver jewelry cleaners, which will also give them back their original shine.
- You can always look for a local artisan silversmith that in less than a minute will return all the brilliance to your silver.
IS ECOSILVER WORSE THAN CONVENTIONAL SILVER?
Not at all! The ecosilver we use in the OA jewelry line is exactly the same as conventional silver. It is sterling silver 925, with the same characteristics as regular silver. The only difference is that we guarantee that the silver we work with comes exclusively from recycling other jewelry, medical devices, x-rays and other items made of silver that, if not recycled, would lead to greater pollution.
The care of ecosilver is exactly the same as conventional silver, since its results and alloy are also exactly the same. You can follow this guide to keep it always as the first day.
